Orange is an album that is by the Maravines. It is an eight song collection, with music that was recorded between 2015 and 2021. The album is produced by Neil Sabatino, and released by Mint 400 Records on Friday, March 3rd, 2023. With new instrumentation, mixing, and mastering, the songs on Orange are gathered from their Studio albums Bruce, Dotty, Avon-by-the-Sea and Bradley. The full album is available on the Internet Archive, as public domain, on Thursday night, June 8th, 2023.
The music promotion company Pirate! describes the album as "a 'best of' the last half decade," and the on line radio station BlowUpRadio notes that it is composed of their "newer songs, along with reworkings of [earlier] songs." Orange is compared to the music of the Indie rock band Rogue Wave, the Alternative rock band Nada Surf, and the Alternative rock band Colour Revolt. W. R. I. R. classifies it as Contemporary Folk, and Napster as Singer-songwriter, and Rock. In an album review by BlowUpRadio, in New Jersey Stage, the author writes that the Maravines are "masters of indie-folk-rock, with beautiful harmonies and hooks that draw you in," adding that the songs are "like floating upon calm waves on a warm day, relaxing and engrossing." It is described as an "example of indie and alternative rock, with a slight psychedelic hue," by Mehoverhull on June 4th.
Short samples from "Apple Pie," "Kim Marie," "Each and Every Time," "Pauleen," "Fears," "Three Figures," "Avon-by-the-Sea," and "Olive Gardens" are included in the first track. An outtake from the album's mixing sessions, Neil Sabatino's remix of the Maravines' cover of "On a Plain" was released on Youtube.com on November 15th, 2022. It is available for download on the Internet Archive, on March 26th, 2023.
In the March 14th interview with the music site Blood Makes Noise, Chris Lee recalls that during writing and recording, they were listening to new Folk rock musicians, W. F. M. U., Mint 400 Records and Sniffling Indie Kids artists. He also explains that recording for Orange was unlike earlier albums, where they would track for a song over months. Beginning with "Apple Pie," song arrangement lasted for one week, recording demos of guitar and drums, and writing accompaniments. Then, the following week, the song was recorded.
An album review at Blood Makes Noise gives a high rating for Orange, at a 9.6 out of 10. They write that the opening song "is a really slick sounding indie folk track, the bass line and slide guitar bring it to another realm but underneath it's just a really great Shins-ish tune." They note that "the vocal is really striking, it's so smooth and really feels so warm on top of this mix."
BlowUpRadio debuted "Apple Pie" during the 7 P. m. New N. J. Music broadcast, on March 20th. The album was listed for the N. A. C. In an album review from the University of Maine's F. M. 91.9 W. M. E. B., on March 24th, they write "the duo return with their fourth studio album release with Mint 400 Records, noting the lo-fi production, and yearning vocals," and they compare it to the music of the Indie rock band the Shins. The album was broadcast uninterupted, during their New Music Friday program.
